Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, lived a young shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was essentially to tend to his flock of sheep.

Their gentle baas and the rustling of the breezes across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his constant associates. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a sense of calm satisfaction.

However, there were the occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. During one such occasion because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.

Stories of predators hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to leveraged this fear and played a trick on the villagers.

One afternoon he raced into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf preying on my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but saw nothing threatening.

The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses here how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was anciently.
